July 16 2000 The Aachen Wave
For a competitor
at Aachen there can be no experience greater than the closing ceremonies
at Aachen, except perhaps an Olympic victory round. As the Parade of Nations
begins, the competitors are greeted by the world's most appreciative equestrian
audience, who in spite of the week's weather, have filled the stands to
capacity, approximately 75,000 strong. As each country represented enters the stadium, the band plays their national anthem. The riders and the crowd wave white hankies to each other in a farewell salute. Parading around the arena, the size of three football fields, the traditional Aachen wave and deafening roar of the crowd ends another year of the number one rated horse show in the world.
