Dressage in the Rockies Profile: Joan Bolton and Mazarin

Joan Bolton and MazarinJoan Bolton and the Hanoverian stallion Mazarin galloped over the competition at Dressage in the Rockies, held at High Prairie Farms in Parker, Colorado. The pair were the FEI High Percentage Champions in both Show I and Show II, August 1, 2, and 3.

Bolton, of Santa Fe, NM, is best known for riding Epernay at the Pan American Games. She has been riding Wanda and Mark Hage's big chestnut (Macho/Renatta by Goldstere) on a regular basis only since May. Before that Mazarin spent four years in the breeding barn. He was shown in Europe but no one is sure of his show record.

"He's a super stallion," Bolton said. "He has one of the best minds for a stallion I've ever dealt with. In the beginning he was a little bit reluctant to work with mares around, but now as soon as I get on his back he is ready to go to work. After four years of not being worked, to have him come back at age 16 is a pretty big accomplishment."
