The Gold Coast Opener Dressage CDI Revisited

Veteran Young Rider Jocelyn Wiese Takes Blue in Young Rider Prix St. Georges

She may only be 18, but Jocelyn Wiese is a veteran dressage competitor who added another winning notch to her belt by taking first place in the FEI Young Rider Prix St. Georges at the Gold Coast Opener CDI Revisited.

On a cool, but sunny Florida day, Wiese earned her victory with the 10-year-old Danish Warmblood Lamborghini. The pair scored 69.85 percent and Wiese was thrilled.

“I’m pretty psyched,” she said. “I knew if I could just ride it well, we’d have a good score.”

Their win was perhaps no surprise to anyone considering that the day before they led in the Young Rider Team Test with a score of 68.889. Wiese is aiming for the NAJYRC Championships to be held this August in Lexington, Virginia. Her performance thus far at the Gold Coast Opener is smoothing her pathway to the Championships.

Following in second behind Wiese was Caroline Roffman and Rigaudon with a score of 66.55 percent. Third place went to Hannah Holland Shook and Cape Town with a score of 65.05 percent.

This is the third season showing for Wiese and Lamborghini (by Michellino), whom Wiese herself calls “Zoom.” And while Lamborghini is schooling Grand Prix, Wiese said it will be some time before he moves up to that level. The pair might possibly compete at Intermediaire in the fall, but more likely will wait until next winter.

Despite her young age, Wiese is a well-known competitor, especially in her native Northeast. In her early teen years she was a familiar face in the winner’s circle with her partner Chopin. Her riding resume even includes international competitions. She’s already competed at past North American Junior and Young Riders Championships and also at the 2002 Championship of the Americas.

Wiese trains with Pam Goodrich, from whom she bought Lamborghini, but she actually spent a good portion of this past fall training alone. That’s because although Wiese hails from Keene, New Hampshire, she now lives in Florida. She arrived at the end of last summer to attend Lynn University in Boca Raton. Goodrich is based in New Hampshire and winters in Florida.

“I got here in August and Pam didn’t come down until the fall, so I was on my own for awhile,” Wiese said.

She made use of that time riding and training Lamborghini and getting immersed in her freshman year at college. But don’t ask about her major.

“Well, I’m not sure yet,” is her answer when asked.

Wiese has found herself facing some fairly stiff competition at the Gold Coast Opener Revisited, but this veteran competitor has faced that before. Besides, she sees it as a good thing.

“When the competition is good, it makes me work harder.”
