Carolyn and Pat Adams and Dressage Horse Don Devere Camp Cross Country to Compete at the Kentucky Horse Park

Carolyn and Pat Adams are like a well-oiled machine, especially when it comes to horses.  So when the time came to decide how they would get to Kentucky from Pleasanton, CA, for their first trip to the 2008 USEF National Developing Horse Championship, seeing the countryside together sounded pretty darn good.  “The farthest we’d hauled a horse had been San Diego which is about an 11-hour drive,” said Carolyn.  “My husband and I just work so well together.  It was an adventure.  We got to see some of the most beautiful country like Nebraska and Wyoming.  I had no idea it would be so green and mowed.  Everything is so clean out here.” Read More....

Chris Hickey and Cabana Boy Hold On To Lead in Six-Year-Old Final, But the Hat Did Not!

Last year’s five-year-old champions Chris Hickey and Cabana Boy were the final ride, and despite the distraction of his top hat blowing off and Chris going off course, the pair earned an 8.644 overall which meant another Young Horse championship for the dynamic duo.  Cabana Boy is a U.S.-bred Hanoverian gelding owned by Hilltop Farm, by Contucci and out of Britania by Bordeaux, bred by Doug and Shannon Langer.  Chris is based in Colora, MD. Overall Chris was very pleased with his rides this weekend.  “I’d never ridden him in this kind of atmosphere; I don’t think many of us have,” he said.  “I was very happy with my horse.  He came out and did his job. Read More...

Nicole Bellah and Winsor Win 5-Year-Old Dressage Young Horse Final

Nicole Bellah, who works with Chris Hickey, took home the highest honor of champion in the five-year-old championship aboard her Dutch-bred stallion Winsor.  The 16.3-hand dark bay is by San Remo out of Para Lady by Julia Mariner and was bred in The Netherlands by PPW Janssen.  The pair earned a score of 8.02 today which gave them an 8.028 overall.  Today’s scores were highlighted by an 8.2 for their canter work.  “Your canter was the best,” said the judges.  “It was highlighted by clear beautiful mediums that come up under straight.” Nicole bought the stallion last June on a trip to Europe after looking at many horses.  “I didn’t want a young horse, and I didn’t want a stallion,” she said.  Read More....

Young Dressage Horses Face Daunting Challenge in Sunday's Final
by Jeannie Blancq Putney for DressageDaily

The remaining two Markel/USEF Young Horse Championships and the USEF National Developing Horse Championship were decided today despite the fact that the remnants of Hurricane Ike attempted to put an end to the competition.  Strong winds that started late in the morning translated to falling scores for many.  The five-year-olds kicked off the morning competition, followed by the six-year-old final, and the Developing Horse.

By the time awards ceremonies were held, it was unmounted and in the relative safety of the pavillion. See who won....

From Across the Nation America's Finest Young Horses Come to Kentucky
By Jeannie Blancq Putney for DressageDaily

The nation’s top young horses from California to Massachusetts have gathered at the Kentucky Horse Park home of the 2010 Alltech World Equestrian Games for the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Championships and the USEF National Developing Horse Dressage Championship.  For some it was an arduous journey but well worth the honor of being invited.  One family left their farm in Florida with Hurricane Ike bearing down on them.  One made the cross-country trip from California and camped out along the way.  Some are first-timers.  One is an Olympic athlete.  One of the interesting tidbits this year—the fifth year of the Young Horse program—is the number of horses that are U.S. bred.  Another is the number of competitors who have competed in this program multiple years, some with the same horse, allowing them to see true progress in the development of the nation’s strongest young equine talent. By Jeannie Blanq Putney for DressageDaily

With just 72 hours to go before the start of the Markel/USEF Young Horse Championship, competitor Jodie Stevens Kelly had no idea whether or not she’d be making the trip to Kentucky.  At home in Destin, FL, Hurricane Ike was brewing, and although the Kelly’s have a solid evacuation plan no one knew where Ike would land.  Last week Destin was in the projected path for most of the week.  “Until it hits the Gulf, we have no idea which way it will go,” said Jodie. Canton, who is both rider and owner of the dark bay Westfalen gelding (Grosso Z x Popocatepetel by Palisandergrund), isn't a bit surprised that his horse is standing at the top. "We've been showing Prix St. Georges this summer and he's scored over 70 percent every time out," Canton said. That's no surprise either considering that earlier in the year when the pair was showing at Fourth Level, they also managed to keep their scores above 70 percent. Read More....
