Christy Scotch

June 12, 2013 - The Dressage Foundation's Renee Isler Dressage Support Fund has awarded a $750 grant to Christy Scotch (AL) to attend the United States Dressage Federation’s L Education Program. Christy, a successful adult amateur who recently began instructing, is eager to attend the L Education Program to continue her dressage education. She also plans to pursue further judging certifications and participate in USDF’s Instructor Certification Program in the future. “I would love to help other riders to learn and move up the levels as I have done. I think that attending the L Program is a good way to expand my experience and understanding of classical dressage,” said Christy.

Saratoga Springs, NY – Many organizations will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of racing in Saratoga Springs. When determining which events to attend during a packed summer racing season, choose an event that gives a voice to the wonderful animals without whom this anniversary would not occur. On August 1, 2013, Equine Advocates will host its Twelfth Annual Awards Dinner and  Charity Auction to be held at the Saratoga Springs City Center. "In this historic year of celebrations for Saratoga Springs, horses and racing, we are delighted to honor two outstanding individuals who have each made history on their own,” said Susan Wagner, President and Founder of Equine Advocates.

In March, Dressage Daily reported on issues faced by Green Mountain Horse Association (GMHA, 501(c)(3)), especially their struggle to replace old, sub-standard footing on nearly 5 acres of arenas.  At the time of the last article, Vermont’s Green Mountains were still covered in snow and the first show was scheduled for early May; the projected cost of the project was $180,000 and there was no money in the bank! Yet, against overwhelming odds, the project got completed on time. This is a heart-warming story of how, when a horse community works together, the extra-ordinary becomes possible. Judy Westlake, a long-time GMHA competitor started the ball rolling.

After Jamie Fell was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in December 2012, she sent her young horses to various trainers in the area, but kept her Small Tour horse close and continued to ride through the winter. As the show season approached, she made the bold move to enter a National Level Competition and did a Prix St. Georges class at Centerline Events at HITS. "I went to the show with nothing to prove, only to show myself that life was “normal” and that I was still capable of being who I am. It's easy to fall into a pool of self-doubt and pity, but to see my clients walk away with blue ribbons, my daughter breeze through the FEI Young Rider Tests and for me to place in the class with other notable professionals after receiving chemotherapy only 3 days prior, proved to me, and hopefully others like me, that life goes on as long as you're willing to fight cancer to the death!"
Jamie catches up with DressageDaily since she first shared her journey with us.

Norman, the Games’ mascot, mingled with the crowds at Roland Garros and struck a pose in the Place des Mousquetaires.

The public from overseas can now purchase a pass for the event! The preparation for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy has moved up to a whole new level. A very concrete level, with less than 450 days till the main event: the launch of ticket sales to attend the world’s biggest equestrian competition due to be held from 23 August to 7 September 2014. The Organising Committee is now rallying together a network of some ten or so tour operators across the world. For the first phase, they’re offering packages comprising Passes, transport and accommodation. In November 2013, the ticket office will be open to the general public, still with Pass-related offers and it’s in the spring of 2014 that the simple entry tickets will be accessible, session per session, while stocks last.

How to half halt – the eternal question that keeps dressage instructors up at night, searching for a better way to explain to their students (No, just me?). Half halting is notoriously subtle, notoriously misunderstood and also notoriously necessary. In the last two parts of this series I have discussed the types of half halt and what you need functioning before you can effectively half halt. Now we move onto the half halt aids. Keep in mind that there are many types of half halt so the half halt with one horse and rider will be different that another horse and rider. You might need to use more or less of your leg, or abdomen or back than me or the rider next to you. That is fine and normal.

Tina Konyot placed second in both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special in Achleiten, Austria with scores of 72.021 and 73.3 respectively. Robert Dover who traveled to Austria as the US Technical Advisor/Chef d’Equipe said, “On their first outing in Europe, Tina Konyot and Calecto V performed a gorgeous Grand Prix, placing second with 72.021%! I could not have been more proud of them and the best is that there are still way more points to be had by this combination. Their movements and expression are world-class and elegant and surely would have been over 74% but for a mistake in the zig-zags which really was just a momentary lapse of concentration.” He continued, “I have not seen Calecto looking more fit or Tina more confident.” As the new Technical Advisor/Chef d’Equipe, Robert Dover, really is working hard to help the athletes have a fighting chance next year. We are proud of the momentum that Tina and the other athletes have started and we look forward to reporting on this year’s European pursuits.
