Jason Canton emerging from the surf near Santa Cruz

Over the past fourteen years Jason Canton has enjoyed training, showing, and teaching students in the eastern United States with many highlights in his career. But a California boy from the Bay Area, Canton and new wife Jessica Blackmon an accomplished Dressage equestrian from her parents Blackstar Sport Horses in Rockwell, Texas, Canton has returned to his roots, setting up shop Canton Dressage at Dutch Dreamhorses in Aromas, California. Bringing his super stallion Supramat OLD to the west coast will give Florida competitors a break from his presence where he took the 2012 Global Dressage Festival by storm earning multiple High Score honors.  “We will miss our friends and family we have met along the way. But we are very excited about our new beginning together as a working team in life and work on the West Coast." Already settled into his new digs, Canton waxed his surfboard and took to the west coast waves joining other California surfer boys Guenter Seidel and David Blake. Canton’s resume spans his lifetime with horses in America and throughout and is a regular name on the National Championship order of go, as well as being long listed for the team. All of this translates into his ability to share his knowledge with his students. And oh yeah, the guy is a lot of fun too.

For anyone that lives in a coastal town the months of June - October have significant meaning to them; Hurricane season. With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center issuing a pre-season Atlantic hurricane forecast that calls for 13 to 20 named storms, including 7 to 11 hurricanes in 2013, people that live in Coastal communities are constantly being reminded of Hurricanes from years past. We have been very fortunate that the past few years have been relatively quite for those living near the Coast, but we also know that at any moment we could get the news that something is brewing in the waters. Smart horsemen have a plan. DressageDaily thanks Jodie Kelly of Southern Cross Equestrian Center in Destin, Forida for sharing their 'routine'.

The always fashionable and travel ready Dressage Judges Janet Foy and Lois Yukens enjoy a moment "out of the box" at the 2013 Kentucky Dressage Association Spring CDI Photo: BobTarr.com

Dressage Judges travel. As competitors, we see them at the end of the arena doing their jobs, imparting their educated comments about how we are doing at a certain level. We have no idea how they prepared to be there, how they live from one weekend to the next, or the lessons they've learned over the years. So, we caught up with three judges who travel nearly every weekend to a show somewhere in the world and asked them how they arrange, assemble, adapt to the weekly traveling. Janet Foy, Natalie Lamping and MerriLynn Griffin all said the same thing: they have a similar simple routine in how to prepare to leave for a judging assignment. One bag is nearly always ready to go, filled with the same important essential items. Once the weather has been checked for the new destination, a color coordination of several outfits must be made with comfortable and stylish shoes. For judges the saying for dress used to be, “Skirt and pearls” but it has eased up a bit over the last several years. Today, it’s most important for judges to be dressed neat and clean, and appropriate for the weather, be that wind, heat, rain or freezing.

Shannon Dahmer and Rock On extend during the FEI Freestyle Test of Choice at the Colorado Horse Park's High Prairie Dressage II.

Parker, CO - June 1, 2013 - Shannon Dahmer rocked it with Rock On in the FEI Freestyle Test of Choice to score a 68.000% in today's High Prairie Dressage II at the Colorado Horse Park. The pair could swing "Dancing With the Stars" with their Grand Prix Freestyle featuring double pirouettes and spot-on one-tempis to "Eye of the Tiger" and other music from the iconic movie, "Rocky." Dahmer said the freestyle score was chosen because Rock On's barn name is Rocky, but more germane to the Rocky theme woven throughout today's winning freestyle is the 16-year-old Oldenburg's history as a fighter who beat the odds to triumph in the dressage arena. In 2009, Rocky nearly died from founder. Dahmer and Rocky's owner, Mary Allyn, were the ones who brought the gelding back to health to help him claim his heavyweight crown. "Isn't that amazing that he's doing the Grand Prix?," Allyn asked. "It was a labor of love and he's such a special horse. It's amazing to get a horse to Grand Prix anyway and especially one who foundered. He's special."

Riverhead, NY – Neue Schule Bits have created quite a stir on the dressage scene with the likes of top riders including Heather Blitz, Steffen Peters, Shannon Peters, and Betsy Steiner singing their praises. Pan Am Gold Medalist and London Olympic team reserve Heather Blitz states, “The lightweight design and fit are amazing, but mostly I just love how my horse goes in it.” Such remarks are common among those who test ride in the bits, which feature unique attributes unique to Neue Schule and high tech designs to ensure a comfortable fit for the horse.  Neue Schule has recently introduced two new Dressage bits. All of Neue Schule’s bits also are designed to address specific problems or tendencies a horse may display, be it coming above the bit, stiffness in the jaw, or any other issues. Dressage is testing enough, who couldn't benefit from a boost in confidence, including our horses? Now, for the horse who shirks from the bit -- leading a domino-effect of performance issues such as falling in/out at the shoulder, tightness in the jaw and poll, or fixing against the hand -- Neue Schule bits is putting the 'comfy' back in 'contact.'

A native of Columbia, Cesar Torrente is an international dressage judge and an FEI level dressage competitor. He is the first judge to be promoted through the 2013 FEI 3 * program. Cesar has had the honor of standing on medal podium to receive the team gold medal two times in the South American Games and the Central American Games. He is a corporate lawyer by profession. He travels the globe to judge worldwide, while maintaining the precarious balance between his career and his passion for horses with apparent ease. He is known in the dressage world as a “rider’s judge”, because he knows what it is like to be in the judges box, as well as the sandbox we call the dressage ring. Cesar started riding at the age of 12 and rode his first grand prix before he turned 20.  Since then he has ridden and trained horses up to Grand Prix level and has been the Colombian National Champion at all levels over several years.
