The Netherlands’ Edward Gal and Glock’s Undercover finished second in yesterday’s Grand Prix and will be a force to be reckoned with as the Freestyle (Photo: FEI/Roland Thunholm)

As the fate of the 2013 Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage title hangs in the balance ahead of tomorrow’s deciding Freestyle, the big question on many lips is whether Germany’s Helen Langehanenberg can prevent double-champion, The Netherlands’ Adelinde Cornelissen, from making it a back-to-back hat-trick of wins with the great Jerich Parzival. However gone are the days of easily predicting the winning combination in this sport which has experienced an extraordinary transformation in recent years. A decade ago the battle would be fought between just a couple of red-hot contenders, with the rest trailing a long way behind. However rising standards of professionalism and horse-power have changed all that, as was demonstrated by a host of super-competitive performances in yesterday's Grand Prix.

Defending World Cup Campions Adelinde Cornelissen and Parzival (Photo: Eurodressage.com)

Europe is a busy place for news especially with the kick off of the Reem ACRA FEI World Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden. Will Adelinde Cornelissen and Parzival be able to defend the title against some pretty stiff competition! Totilas absence in the show ring after sustaining a knee injury in the breeding shed will likely continue. See when the stallion may actually return to competition. U.S. Olympian Jan Ebeling is getting a new ride after a 10 owner syndicate was put together and what a nice ride it is! Check out an Arabian that is quite a record breaker in the dressage arena and see what his accomplishments are. Lets all root for Sy Budofsky! Why you ask? He is geared for action to try to become the 127th person to be inducted in the Century Club for horse/rider combinations that has a collective age of over 100!

Germany’s Helen Langehanenberg threw down the gauntlet when securing a convincing victory with Damon Hill NRW in the preliminary Grand Prix at the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage 2012/2013 Final in Gothenburg, Sweden today. The 30-year-old rider and her 13-year-old stallion have been challenging the supremacy of back-to-back double-champions Adelinde Cornelissen (NED) and her great gelding, Jerich Parzival, for some time now, and following today’s result have piled on the pressure ahead of Saturday’s Freestyle decider.

For Dressage, the Reem Acra FEI WC™ Final in Gothenburg marks the 28th Dressage Final this year. Queen of the FEI World Cup™ series of course still is Anky van Grunsven. She won no less than nine Finals with two horses, five times with the unforgettable Bonfire and four times with her two fold Olympic gold medallist Salinero. Nevertheless remembering all those amazing Finals, Gothenburg has a special place in Van Grunsven's heart. Not because of her win in 1996, but especially because of the very first final she was riding with Prisco. Anky van Grunsven says: "I will never forget the first time that I competed in a FEI World Cup Final showing Prisco in Gothenburg in 1989. I was able to watch Corlandus showed by Margit Otto Crépin at that time. What a special horse! Goosebumps! This power, energy and control combined with an easy elegance! I'll never forget Corlandus. He really marks a special highlight for me in the World Cup history."

Germany’s Helen Langehanenberg, one of the strongest opponents to defending double-champion Adelinde Cornelissen from The Netherlands, will be first to go in tomorrow’s (25 April) opening competition of the Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage 2012/2013 Final in Gothenburg, Sweden. The draw for the Grand Prix took place tonight at the Scandinavium Arena, and Langehanenberg and her 13-year-old stallion, Damon Hill NRW, got the least favoured starting spot, while Canada’s Jacqueline Brooks was drawn next to go with D Niro.

Debra Wiedmaier Photo: Stefan Neary

For Debra Wiedmaier making the trip to Rosebrook Farm in Georgetown Mass to participate in the Young Horse Training session with USEF Young Horse trainer Scott Hassler was a break from her busy schedule running her facility DW Dressage in Millbrook New York, yet an opportunity for her to present Guy Wildenstein’s, Freibeuter, a 5-year-old Oldenburg gelding by Florencio x Fabrice to Hassler. Wiedmaier has trained multiple young horses to FEI who then achieved long listed status to the US Team, and like “Fried Butter” many of hers and her clients’ horses she selected as foals in Europe. A professional who has trained and competed in Europe under the tutelage of some of the world’s top dressage mentors, Wiedmaier came away from her session with Hassler enlightened and inspired.

The new KWPN stallion database at www.kwpn.org contains extensive information about KWPN-approved and KWPN-recognized stallions. The online database includes stallions which are currently available as well as older stallions which have made the KWPN the renowned studbook it is today. Breeders, of course, have the important task of carefully choosing the best stallion for their mares; however, finding that stallion can be a complicated process, as there are many from which to choose. By utilizing breeding values and other valuable information contained in this database, you can simplify the search for the right partner for your mare.
