Last fall Lisa Wilcox, Ernst Hoyos, and Gestuet Vorwerk in Cappeln, Germany offered to have a young rider from the United States spend 6 weeks to three months in training with them at the Gestuet Vorwerk. Lisa, an American who lived in California and Colorado, has now spent many years in Germany perfecting her system of riding and training. Lisa was a member of the US team that won the silver medal at the World Championships last year and is currently ranked 4th in the BCM World Dressage Rankings. She remembers her struggles in the early years of her career, so she has offered to help an American young rider and horse.

Ernst Hoyos, is Austrian and after nearly 30 years at the Spanish Riding School he moved to Germany work with riders and horses. Some of his other students include Ulla Salzgeber and Heike Kemmer.

Gestuet Vorwerk is one of the top Oldenburg breeding farms in Germany and stands the stallions that Lisa competes including Rohdiamant, Royal Diamond, Rosier, and Relevant as well as others.

The USET’s 1996 Representative to the Volvo World Cup Dressage, Gothenburg, Sweden, Kathy Von Ertfelda, has another claim to fame; her son Matthew is still one of the survivors of the Amazon as this season’s newsiest version of television best reality program is well underway.

Born in Hong Kong, the now 33-year-old designs restaurants and bars for a global lodging company, and was also listed as one of the 2002 People Magazine’s Most Eligible Bachelors. He grew up on his Mom’s horse farm in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and was just in Florida on a family visit. No one knows, not even his Mom how long Matthew will last on the series. All survivor participants sign a multi-million dollar agreement to keep the outcome of the series top secret until the final show.

On Sunday, March 2 the 2003 Freestyle Celebration presented by Play For T.I.M.E. paid tribute to the “Year of the Freestyle”. Lynda Alicki, Patrick Burssens, Pamela Goodrich, Bent Jensen, Betsy Steiner and George Williams performed a stunning musical quadrille (plus two), to the tunes of Motown.

The audience, caught up in the excitement, clapped to the beat and swayed to the music while cheering the riders on in their dance for women around the world. As the spectacular six performed pirouettes and half-passes in unison the audience roared their approval, finishing with a standing ovation as the riders delighted the crowd with several laps around the ring – it was like an encore, the crowd just didn’t want to let them go.

The quadrille (plus two), created to assist The Breast Cancer Research Foundation in their efforts to prevent and find a cure for breast cancer, was held at The Palm Beach Dressage Derby, a CDI***/CDIY competition located at Walter and Mary Anne McPhail’s Horse Park at Equestrian Estates in Loxahatchee, Florida.

The audience for the kur included a seven-deep crowd around the arena, a tent filled with Derby sponsors, and a chalet hosting 360 guests for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation benefit luncheon.

In the sweltering heat Shelly Francis won both the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special in three star CDI classes of the Palm Beach Dressage Derby. The Derby, which is considered to be Dressage in Florida's most prestigious competition of the circuit, attracted large crowds who were offered three days of top dressage competition in the toasting sun.

The CDI leg of the 2003 Palm Beach Dressage Derby offered various strong winners such as Tina Konyot, Dr Cesar Parra, Shannon Oldham-Dueck and Jan Brons, but only Shelly Francis was able to establish a double victory that weekend. Aboard the 16.2 hands high gelding Gala, Francis scored 67.792% in the Grand Prix and 67.960% in the Special, twice beating Israelian Oded Shimoni on his Dutch bred Glenstern.

The 13-year old Rhinelander Gala (Goldstrand x Foxtrot) is owned by Patricia Stempel and has been ridden by Francis since he was three. Known for his temperamental attitude, Gala stayed focused for Derby, hosted on the premises of Mary Ann and Walter McPhail in West Palm Beach, Florida. Francis is located in Woodstock, VT, but has come to Florida with the intention to make Gala peak at Grand Prix level this 2003 show season.

The 44-year old Shelly Francis became known on the international CDI dressage scene aboard the Hanoverian stallion Pikant. Francis was a USET American Dressage team member at the 1998 World Equestrian Games in Rome.

Guenter Seidel riding the 13-year-old Westphalian gelding, Nikolaus 7, scored 77.650 in the freestyle, to win the U.S. Grand Prix Freestyle Championship/U.S. League Final presented by USA Equestrian.

In the field of 8 riders, 6 declared their intent to compete for the U.S. slot at the 2003 Dressage World Cup Finals in Göteborg, Sweden, March 27 - 30. Prior to the event, Sue Blinks and Nancy Polozker announced that they did not wish to be included in the League Final.

This year, the World Cup Organizing Committee and the FEI Dressage Committee, increased the number of participants in the finals from 11 to 18. This paved the way for George Williams and Rocher, a 12-year-old Westphalian mare, the winners of the Grand Prix with a score of 70.640, to join Guenter Seidel and Nikolaus 7 and wild card participants Debbie McDonald and Brentina as U.S. representatives in the finals.

The U.S. Freestyle Championship was held in combination with the U.S. League Final for the Dressage World Cup on February 21 - 23, in conjunction with the Miami Dade Winter Dressage CDI*** held at the Tropical Park Equestrian Center in Miami, FL. For the Freestyle Championship scores were calculated with the Grand Prix being 40% and the Grand Prix Freestyle counting 60%. For the U.S. League Final, the Grand Prix scores determined the start of the Grand Prix Freestyle.
