Our newest Who's Who member was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and her very first riding lessons were on an unruly mare named Zsa Zsa. Moving through Pony club, and pony camp, her biggest desire was to do eventing. Through the connection of an uncle, this person was offered to train with Three Day Eventer Jimmy Day in Toronto, but he recommended Christilot Boylen-Hanson to learn a dressage basis.

One thing led to another and the eventing plans were quickly put away. As a working student for Boylen-Hanson, this person met Egon von Neindorff and soon moved to Germany for two years. When our Who's Who member returned to the U.S.A., this person rode the Selection Trials in Bloomfield, Michigan, and was invited to New York where the official Olympic Selection Trials were being held. By working for Mrs. Hewitt, our Who's Who member cfinally kicked off, her career and became one of the most renowned American dressage riders.

The KWPN licensed breeding stallion Facet, by Vanitas x Tolbert, has been sold to the United States. Californian Gay Walker purchased the chestnut Grand Prix stallion from German former young rider Gerda Lehmann and will put him up for stud in the 2004 breeding season.

Facet is a 16-year old Dutch warmblood who gained international recognition as Prix St Georges horse under Dutch Olympic team rider Ellen Bontje. In 1999, Facet was sold to Manfred Queck who later sold him to Gerda Lehmann. The latter competed him in 1999 but returned to ride to Queck in 2000. Manfred Queck and Facet became 2000 Baden Wurttemberg Reserve Champions at Grand Prix level and maintained a successful CDI competition career until 2002.

Gay Walker found Facet in Germany on a buying trip with trainers Jennifer and Jurgen Hoffmann. After having seen more than 50 horses, her eye was caught on the flasy appearance of Facet and she was hooked on the horse for life. "Facet is the best thing that ever happened to me. I feel like I've won the lottery," Walker said.

The 2003 Bayer/United States Equestrian Team (USET) Festival of Champions, Presented by State Line Tack, will host the Pan American Games dressage selection trials, June 19-22 at the USET Olympic Training Center in Gladstone, NJ.

The USET Intermediaire I Championship at the Festival will serve as the selection trials to choose the rider/horse combinations who will represent the United States in dressage at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 7-10.

To qualify for the selection trials, rider/horse combinations had to compete in a series of qualifying events held throughout the country from September, 2002 – June 1, 2003. Rider/horse combinations had to compete in the Prix St. Georges and the Intermediaire I in a minimum of two USET Qualifying Competitions. At least one of those competitions had to be a CDI (Concours Dressage Internationale). In addition, combinations had to complete one Intermediaire I Freestyle at a qualifier.

The following are the top twelve qualified riders (one of whom has qualified with two horses) for the Pan Am Selection Trials:

After a year as a non-CDI competition due to a date conflict, the CDI is back in Raleigh, NC, this year from May 30-June 1. Competitors and organizers alike are relieved to have the show back on track. Organizer Janine Malone isn’t satisfied that all of the kinks have been worked out, but she is excited that the conflict has been resolved and is looking forward to the future of the show. With plans for a new covered arena at the Hunt Horse Complex it can only get bigger and better.

As the East Coast Final for five- and six-year-old horses, Raleigh was a special occasion on the spring calendar. A qualifier for the World Breeders Young Horse Championships in Verden, Germany this August, the show attracted a top selection of young horses and their riders. Judges included “O” rated Stephen Clarke and Linda Zang, with Zang giving commentaries following each ride.

Winner of the five-year-old horse section with an impressive score of 8.4, Joe Sandven of Fletcher, NC rode his own Rachmaninoff, a Hannoverian gelding by Rubinstein that he purchased in Verden last year. The gelding’s half sister Red Romance, also by Rubinstein, placed second on 8.2 with rider Susan Dutta.

Prior to leaving on her 2003 Euro-Tour, Mary Phelps flew to Richmond, VA, together with her personal assistent Tracey Scharf for a two-day training seminar at the Markel Headquarters. Mary documented this trip and tells her story:
"Since announcing our move to Markel Insurance Corporation in April, we have hit the ground running, having one of the most successful months ever in equine insurance premiums, in our very first month working for the company. I have been to the Richmond Virginia Headquarters a few times, but Tracey Scharf, our office (and life) manager, joined me on our latest trip, where we spent 2 full days training and working with the management team responsible for our success.

This was a particularly special occasion for Tracey, as her 3 year old son was recently diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, throwing her life into a whirlwind of doctors, medications, and a frantic search for a day care who would take him. With Hayden in the capable hands of Tracey’s Mom, she had the chance to get away for a couple of days getting the first full nights’ sleep in her own comfortable hotel room provided by Markel."

NEDA is honored to have, for the second year in a row, three time World Champion Cup Ulla Salzgeber as our featured clinician for the NEDA 2003 Weekend. All activities will be held November 8th and 9th, at the Johnson and Wales Equestrian Facility in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Ms. Salzgeber competed as a junior in numerous gold medal-winning rides in throughout Europe, winning the European Championships for Juniors. After earning a law degree, she developed a dressage-training barn, in Bavaria, Germany. Prior to taking a break to teach and train, which is truly her favorite ambition, she had achieved over 150 victories at the highest levels of the sport. When the legendary Latvian-bred Rusty came into her life in 1994, she was lured back into the world of competitive dressage.

Continuing her domination in the equestrian sport of dressage, Yvonne Losos de Muñiz of the Dominican Republic was once again crowned the winner, this time at the Kentucky Dressage Association Spring Dressage Show held May 22-25 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY.

Riding Inatana Las Marismas, her 13-year-old bay Dutch Warmblood mare by Latano, Losos de Muñiz won all three of her classes – Prix St. Georges, Intermediare I and the Intermediare Freestyle. In the Prix St. Georges, Losos de Muñiz bested a field of 12 entries, earning a score of 71%. Losos de Muñiz again came out on top in the following day’s Intermediare I competition, this time with a score of 72.25%.

In the Intermediare Freestyle where riders choreograph required movements to the music of their choice, Losos de Muñiz dominated, earning an incredibly high score of 76.63% to easily claim victory over her closest competition, Shawna Harding riding Kestrel, who scored 71.50%. Losos de Muñiz’s world-class score is even more incredible considering that it was the first time she had performed her recently designed Freestyle in competition.
