Christopher Schofield (GBR), former Chairman of Great Britain’s Young Rider Selectors programme, passed away on 4 January at the age of 90. Many young British Eventing riders enjoyed success during his leadership of the Young Rider Selectors programme, including William Fox-Pitt, Tina Cook and Pippa Funnell. Jane Holderness-Roddam, who secured team gold in Eventing for Great Britain at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, remembers Christopher Schofield as "a truly great character, he was always incredibly enthusiastic and supportive and was always thrilled to hear how the Young Riders were getting on, even in more recent years. He was always there with wise words of advice for us all." Legendary junior and young Eventing trainer Gill Watson worked alongside Christopher as team trainer from 1981: "He was the backbone to all the British Young Riders success and really set the ball rolling,” she said. “To me, he was the most amazing supporter and friend."

  • Wellness Wednesday - Antibiotic Use in Factory Farms

Written by Tigger Montague, Formulator (BioStar EQ)

The FDA announced in Dec 2011 that the agency will now ban the agricultural use of cephalosporins, a class of antibiotics used in humans to treat pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections as well as urinary tract infections. In horses it is used to treat bacterial strains of Streptococcus equi ssp that cause lower respiratory tract infections. Concerned that routine use of this antibiotic will push pathogens to develop resistance, the FDA cited this as an important step to reducing factory farm antiobiotic abuse.

Diana Mukpo couldn’t be happier that her first win of the new year came aboard her favorite partner, Pascal, in the FEI Grand Prix de Dressage Open GAIG/USDF Qualifier with a score of 66.4%. Aside from the win, their relationship is the cherished highlight for Diana. “I enjoy this horse tremendously on a moment to moment basis. I love riding him and that is the most important component. This horse has never once said no to me. He can be a bit hot in his work ethic but he has never once shown any resistance in his daily work in the six years I’ve owned him. He always tries his heart out,” she beamed.

Sent to Diana as a sale prospect in 2005, without much education as a nine-year-old, the handsome bay Dutch Warmblood gelding by Julius (Voltaire) out of a Burggraaf mare was clearly not amateur material. “He was hot, never naughty but as an over-achiever in wanting to work, and that’s where problems sometimes came up because he would try so hard in his work.”
