ANCCE Announces 14,000 PRE Horses Registered in the PRE Stud Book for 2011

In 2011, the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book registered 13,137 new inscriptions; this totaled 199,159 horses registered on the 31st of December. Of these, 108,547 are mares and 90,612 stallions or geldings. In terms of other services offered by the Stud Book, 6,725 assessments for Basic Approval for Breeding were processed; 10,749 ownership changes were carried out — this is a 3.4% increase over 2010 — and 1,548 new Breeder codes were issued. It must be highlighted that some of these correspond to breeders from new countries, including Russia, China, Slovenia and Slovakia. Thus, the PRE Stud Book currently has data of Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders in more than 60 countries.

In this regard, the 22 international assessment trips take on a particular relevance; this shows the important promotional efforts carried out by PRE Stud Book representatives. With this same objective, throughout 2011, the PRE Stud Book participated in a number of fairs and congresses to maintain PRE owners informed, as well as annual meetings held with international representatives.

Likewise, in October of last year, Sevilla hosted the annual WBFSH meeting. The International Sport Horse Breeders’ Federation brought together more than 100 representatives from all the breeder associations handling the Stud Books of the various horse breeds the world over. Members of the International Equestrian Federation and from other organizations representing the sector participated in the event. For the first time in Spain, this international meeting was organized by the National PRE Breeders’ Association of Spain (ANCCE), which provided a unique opportunity to demonstrate how ANCCE works and its objectives with regards to the Breeding Program and the PRE Stud Book. It also served to promote the Spanish horse as a high performance breed for competitive disciplines.

Throughout 2011, the PRE Stud Book also restructured its corporate website, which has resulted in a clearer and simpler design, thus allowing the incorporation of new functions. It is now much more user-friendly and facilitates the processing of documents and other online services for general users. It has also incorporated information about the horses that have been genetically assessed within the framework of the Breeding Program, to provide a list of those breeding horses that have obtained a genetic category, such as Young Recommended Breeding Stock, Improver Breeding Stock or Elite Breeding Stock.

ANCCE, on the other hand, updated its quality certificate, according to UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 standards, in July of last year to handle the PRE Stud Book; this translates in greater support for the excellence of the work performed. Transparency, increased services offered by the PRE Stud Book, the lab work and the application of a pioneer administration program has been fundamental to renew this certification. Currently, the PRE Stud Book is the only equine stud book in Spain that has the AENOR certificate.

Last November, at SICAB, ANCCE signed a collaboration agreement with USPREA (United States PRE Association), by which the American association has begun to work first-hand in the handling of the Stud Book affairs through its office in Wellington, Florida. This agreement represents a major advantage for the Breeders of USA and Canada.

In recent months, the Stud Book has readjusted its rates for various services, thus adapting to the complex international economic situation and increasing its support of the Breeders at times of particular difficulty. The PRE Stud Book, handled by ANCCE since 2007 by appointment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, has been progressively increasing its levels of quality, effectiveness and reliability. This has brought international recognition and today, the PRE Stud Book is considered a reference model for other equine breeds, especially in Europe.
 
In 2012, The PRE Stud Book celebrates its first centennial of its creation by virtue of a Royal Decree from the Ministry of Defense, dated the 13th of January 1912. For a whole century, the administration of the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book was the responsibility of the Spanish Armed Forces, initially through the Dirección General de Cría Caballar y Remonta (General Equine Breeding Office), which is, today, an independent organization known as the Cría Caballar de las Fuerzas Armadas (Equine Breeding of the Armed Forces).
